In this mini review we examine horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events in the mammalian gastrointestinal tract and their role in the evolutionary adaptation of microorganisms to the gut environment. We explore the notion of mammalian gut as a melting pot of genetic exchange, resulting in the large extent of HGT occurrence.
