The relative contribution of sediment food ( e. g. organic matter, carbohydrates, proteins, C, N, polyunsaturated fatty acids) and environmental variables ( e. g. oxygen, pH, depth, sediment grain size, conductivity) in explaining the observed variation in benthic macroinvertebrates is investigated.
