This thesis explored how asphaltene and naphthenic amphiphile species influence the formation (morphology and size) and stability of heavy crude oil (bitumen) emulsions. It was experimentally shown that asphaltenes produce water-in-oil emulsions. Naphthenic amphiphiles on the other hand flip the emulsion morphology to oil-in-water. It was further demonstrated that the size and stability of these emulsions is influenced by physicochemical effects such as the pH, solvent-bitumen-water ratios, solvent aromaticity, and temperature.
