grantor: University of TorontoThe scientific literature suggests that the sleeping-waking brain interacts with the immune system. In animal studies, cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1 promote sleep and induce an acute phase proinflammatory response. In humans, levels of these cytokines in the peripheral vascular compartment are increased with nocturnal sleep vs wakefulness. Furthermore, in humans there are diurnal sleep/wake related changes in lymphocyte distribution in the peripheral vascular system. Since much of the cellular immune functions are found in the lymphatic compartment, we investigated how sleep/wakefulness relates to lymphocyte distribution and whether cytokines, e.g. TNF-α, would not only promote sleep but could also...
