grantor: University of TorontoThis thesis presents an integrated solution for generating modulation frequencies in a GHz range, while providing a fine resolution by using a fractional-N approach. The synthesizer contains a phase-locked-loop that controls a four-stage ring oscillator to generate frequencies at around 700MHz. The four-stage ring oscillator provides two sets of quadrature signals to a mixer to demodulate any incoming RF at twice the oscillator's frequency. Design theories and issues are discussed in each chapter. For all building blocks, system-level and transistor-level simulations are verified and presented. A complete frequency synthesizer is fabricated in a 0.5um-CMOS process. The active area of the whole design ...
