grantor: University of TorontoPreviously, reagents have been developed that react within hemoglobin to interconnect the subunits to prevent dissociation of the $\alpha\beta$ dimers. However, there has been no reagent which can react to form these intramolecular cross-links while forming an intermolecular link between hemoglobins. This thesis reports the development of such a reagent and its reaction with hemoglobin to produce dimers of cross-linked hemoglobin, or hemoglobin bis-tetramers. N,N$\sp\prime$-5,5$\sp\prime$-bis (bis(3,5-dibromosalicyl)isophthalate) terephthalamide (DBIT) was synthesized. It reacts with hemoglobin to form crosslinked bis-tetramers.M.Sc
