This paper presents three different cases where novel pilot scale surface treatment line has been used successfully to demonstrate three pre-commercial applications beyond traditional paper process concepts. The first application was based on replacement of traditional pigments in coatings by a thermoplastic starch pigment to create a smooth surface for printed electronics. The second application was based on an oxidizing reaction between an enzyme and a substrate to produce a colour reaction. The third application concentrated on tailoring paper surface properties using thin starch based coating layer so that the same base paper could be used for offset or rotogravure printing depending on the end us
