The article presents the implementation and results of the road condition monitoring conducted in the cooperative intersection safety system developed under the INTERSAFE-2 project. The proposed stationary camera system is relative inexpensive with price of 2 kEur which makes it attractive for wide deployment. The available friction level is estimated in order to start automatic braking earlier if the road surface is slippery. The road monitoring application is based on polarisation differences between horizontal and vertical planes. To improve the reliabity of detection, graininess analysis has been added and is crucial for detecting snowy ground.
