The systematic design and optimization of performance of coated surfaces suffers from lack of suitable procedures to carry out such an analysis. A tribological contact with two loaded surfaces in relative motion is a complex system requiring a general three-dimensional finite deformation and finite sliding contact analysis in order to succeed. Such analyses were carried out for a 2 m TiN coating on a tool steel substrate. The analyses were performed to simulate the whole scratch test and the results subjected to a fracture mechanical analysis.
