Infrared thermography technique was employed to investigate the tearing process of paper. It could observe the development of stress concentration as a local temperature change in thermal images. Though delamination accompanied more or less with tearing process, it should occur only within a small number of layers. The ratio of heat generation to tear work was smaller than that for in-plane tensile test. The contribution of bending energy should partly explain this. Tear energy of NBKP sheets correlated well with heat by damage, except for heavy beating
