A short literature review is presented on the emission of noise and its measurement in the field. The applicability of existing measurement procedures to large industrial sources is analysed. As a result, a new proposal for a procedure is outlined. The method chosen as a basis for the procedure consists of one or more measurement paths of arbitrary shape encircling the source area. The industrial establishment or premises are treated as a single extended source. Only horizontal sound radiation is considered. Special emphasis is given to the determination of the acoustic centre and horizontal directivity
