Lignocellulosic materials have potential for novel sustainable ink binders. Finding proper combination of different wood based binders, for example modified hemicelluloses, in order to reach the demands set by printing process and end product is the future goal. Sustainability of inks could be further increased by using natural colorants although at the moment they have limitations for printing application. There already exists eco-friendly (EF) inks where parts of materials are renewable based. Also sustainable substrates are developed. Compatibility between new sustainable substrate selection and eco-friendly inks will be important in addition to recycling issues. Parallel development of both would be favorable.
