The objective of the work is to evaluate the most economic options in transferring biomass from its source locations to users at the regional, intra-continental and intercontinental locations. Four distinct stages may be distinguished in the work: - resource supply - local conversion - long distance logistics - final conversion and end use. Different stages are shown schematically in Figure 1. Initially at least following biomass resources are considered: - woody biomasses (including forest industry by-products, forest residues, and other wood fuels) - agricultural by-products (straw, bagasse, and other volume products) - Specifically grown biomass (short rotation forestry, grasses)
