Seven often used portable hardness testers have been tested in both ideal and non-ideal situations against calibrated stationary equipment. To study the performance of the testers the sample orientation and the inclination of the tester to the sample surface were varied systematically. In addition, the thickness and the mass of the sample as well as the coupling between the sample and the support were varied. It was found that a couple of the testers were totally inapplicable for on-site use. The other testers performed well when certain strict precautions were taken with respect to sample geometry and size
