In recent years, the rapid evolution of computing power, available computer memory and parallel processing methods have brought the self‐consistent modelling of edge plasmas in fusion devices within reach. The use of orbit‐following Monte Carlo simulation has been validated in numerous challenging problems of neoclassical physics, and molecular dynamics simulations of plasma‐wall interactions can be utilized to obtain impurity yields for use in edge plasma and neutral codes. A combination of such methods may facilitate the self‐consistent description of edge plasma transport in fusion devices.<br/
