Adhesion, friction and wear of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), carbon-reinforced PTFE, and glass-reinforced PTFE in sliding contact with nitrogen-implanted and unimplanted AISI 316 stainless steel were determined. The transfer of PTFE within the first 10 unidirectional traverses was investigated using the 19F(p, αγ)16O nuclear reaction. External proton beam induced X-ray emission (PIXE) was used to determine the metal transfer from AISI 316 to pin heads.Nitrogen implantation considerably reduced the transfer of PTFE to the steel surface, and the transfer of the metallic elements from stainless steel to the PTFE-based composites.
