Critical Study of Essential Elements linked with the adoption of Condition-Based Maintenance

The paper examines the relationship between the failure patterns observed in industry and the corresponding impact on the adoption necessity and potential benefits of Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM). Industry appears to often, misunderstand this relationship although for an informed decision the proper recording of failure data is important. Publicly available relevant data of wear are, at best, limited. Even though a great number of papers have been published in order to compare the efficiency of various maintenance strategies, initial gathered data clearly point to differences between various industrial sectors. This finding stresses the pronounced need for accurate data to support these types of studies and decisions. Wherever such data collection mechanisms are not in place, decisions rely mostly on intuition and expert views. This paper suggests the importance of further supporting such investments by appropriately addressing the need to collect relevant data as a basis upon which to make the right decisions
