In this study we surveyed technological possibilities to obtain bio-based carbon business in Finland applying biomass derived polymers and precursor structuring prior to carbonization. We reviewed application requirements for carbon materials of several applications including high performance engineering materials as well as materials for high efficient separation and applied energy technologies. We made designs for novel carbon materials to meet these requirements based on our background knowledge of possibilities of wood based polymeric materials, precursor production and carbonization processes.
