The background to the investigation and development of new regression equations suitable for the prediction of total hull resistance is described.The investigation indicated that, given an adequate number of data, equations derived at discrete increments of speed-length ratio and with a limited number of hull definition variables can provide very satisfactory preliminary resistance predictions. Standard errors are of the order of 3% to 6%
