Respiring organisms derive energy mainly from electron transfer reactions that are coupled to the translocation of ions across the cell membrane. This process is performed by a group of membrane-localized protein complexes that hold different cofactors with redox properties, such as flavins, hemes, and other iron-containing centers. These redox complexes constitute the electron transport or respiratory chain.
