Methanogenic archaea are strictly anaerobic organisms responsible for the production of all biologically produced methane making them key players of the global carbon cycle. These unusual organisms derive their energy from the reduction of one-carbon (C-1) compounds to methane. Among methanogenic archaea, Methanosarcina are the most metabolically diverse being able to use H2/CO2, acetate, methanol, methylamines and methyl sulfides as substrates for methanogenesis.
