218 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1998.Building on feminist studies that have linked pronatalism with nationalism, I examine right wing nationalisms and more inclusive, citizen-based nationalisms, which are more accepting of "the other," but may still be concerned with reproducing a national group. This study reveals a complex set of issues surrounding pronatalism and gender equity. In recent years, policies have generally become more gender-neutral in tone and content. However, pronatalist efforts in the three countries I examined had negative implications for gender equity as well, namely, restrictions on contraception or abortion and emphasis in public discourse on women's role as mother, rather than citiz...
