This is one of two long chain specific condensing enzymes in E. coli and is required for unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis. The other enzyme necessary for producing unsaturated fatty acids is 3-hydroxy-decanoyl-ACP dehydrase, encoded by the fabA gene. This gene has previously been shown to be positively regulated by FadR.
