There are currently no drugs available to cure microsporidiosis. In this thesis, I describe my work examining the effects of phytochemicals and pharmaceutical drugs on microsporidian infection in insects. Of 15 compounds tested, only xanthotoxin, a linear furanocoumarin, delayed death in Trichoplusia ni caterpillars infected with Vairimorpha sp. (T. ni isolate). This delay in death is due to indirect effects. Xanthotoxin does not directly inhibit microsporidian development or invasion of the host, but rather inhibits one of five bacteria species isolated from the midgu...
