Nohkan music in contemporary Noh dramas does not depart in any significant way from traditional forms, content, and usage. The few variations noted would seem to reflect the personalities and preferences of individual musicians and composers rather than represent an iconoclastic movement to break with past traditions. In fact, by largely following traditional practices rather than indulging in any great departures, it becomes more likely that the new plays could eventually become a part of the traditional reperto...
