92 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1999.It appears that school quality, measured by school expenditures, is a significant determinant of pupil pass rates in reading, math and all three exams. Hence, "money matters" at a school campus-level in predicting educational achievement. Furthermore, the effect of school expenditures on educational achievement varies inversely with family income. Thus, the marginal productivity of an additional dollar of spending is higher in schools attended predominantly by poor pupils. In addition, many of the pupil, family and neighborhood characteristics are statistically significant determinants of educational achievement.
