77 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1998.The third objective was to determine whether genotypes can be screened for resistance to ear infection by selecting for resistance to stalk and tassel galls. Plants were inoculated by stalk injection and silk channel injection. Incidence of ears with galls was not correlated with severity of stalk and tassel galls. Two thousand Zea mays accessions were screened by stalk and seedling injection. Three accessions are potential sources of resistance to common smut.U of I OnlyRestricted to the U of I community idenfinitely during batch ingest of legacy ETD
