Selection Response, Genetic Variation, and Combining Ability of High Oil Maize Genotypes

The study showed significant genetic variability estimates were available for grain weight plant -1 in AEC6S3 lines and for grain yield in AEC6S2 x LH185 testcrosses. Due to significant negative genotypic correlation between oil concentration and grain weight plant -1 in AEC6 lines, breeding for increased grain weight plant-1 could reduce oil concentration. Based on adequate levels of additive genetic variance available and high narrow sense heritability estimates for grain yield and other traits in the AEC6S2 x LH185 testcrosses, further improvement for grain yield in testcrosses should be achieved by recurrent selection using inbred LH185 as the tester without a great reduction in both oil and protein concentrations.U of I OnlyRestricted to the U of I community idenfinitely during batch ingest of legacy ETD
