183 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1997.Dynamic NMR studies at ambient pressure were also perfonned on the polar fluids ethanol, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol, propionic acid, and pentafluoropropionic acid confined to porous silica glasses with well-defined pore sizes. The $\sp{13}$C NMR spin-lattice relaxation times were measured and analyzed in terms of the two-state-fast exchange model, which allows separation of the surface layer relaxation rates. The experiments showed that the hydrocarbon fluids form stronger hydrogen-bond interactions with the silica surface, and that confinement has little effect on the internal rotation of terminal -CF$\sb3$ or -CH$\sb3$ groups.U of I OnlyRestricted to the U of I community i...
