A study of selected early piano works by Bohuslav Martinu

This study examines two sets of Martinů’s early compositions for solo piano. An introduction deals with Martinů’s historical background and a review of the literature about his life and music. Martinů’s life and stylistic development will help to understand his musical influences. The first chapter discusses Martinů’s three volumes of the collection Puppets, H. 92, 116, and 137, influenced by Czech folk music. The second chapter focuses on the cycle entitled Butterflies and Birds of Paradise, H. 127 reflecting the influence of Debussy’s music. An analysis of formal structure, harmony, melody, and rhythm provides illustrations of these influences. Also, each chapter covers elements of Martinů’s personal writing style and performance issues in the compositions. The discussion and analysis is intended to assist pianists in understanding and performing the music, as these works would be charming and excellent additions to the repertoire for pianists and piano students.U of I OnlyUIUC School of Music polic
