262 p.Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1988.The present studies were undertaken to ascertain the genetic role of knob DNA in determining the rate of development and flowering time in maize (Zea mays L.). The knob compositions of 41 inbred lines and varieties of maize were determined. In almost all U.S. commercial lines, a large knob on the long arm of chromosome 7 was present, followed by one on the long arm of chromosome 4 and on the short arm of chromosome 9.Over 80 inbreds and varieties of maize were used for the genetic analyses.
