Continuing Education in Music: A Study of Successful Practices, Innovative Strategies, and Current Trends

328 p.Thesis (Educat.D.)--University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1982.The purpose of this study was to describe the operation and content of programs of continuing education in music at selected universities.The data gathering process primarily consisted of personal interviews with all staff members responsible for programs of continuing education in music at five selected universities. Additional information was obtained from catalogs, bulletins, brochures, pamphlets, and newsletters. The universities included in the study were: (1) the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, (2) the University of Minnesota, (3) the University of Wisconsin at Madison, (4) Iowa State University, and (5) the University of Missouri at Kansas City.Programs of continuing education in music at the five colleges and universities studied are greatly affected by the institution with which they are affiliated, influences by schools, departments, and other agencies, and historical development. There is no widely accepted body of knowledge; ongoing programs have little communication with others.Decentralization of continuing education divisions has brought about new affiliation for three of five programs of continuing education in music which now operate as a component of the department or school of music. Those programs do, however, continue to maintain a liaison relationship with the central office of continuing education.Programs of continuing education in music are quite diverse and bear little resemblance to one another.
