Unlike previous studies on artistic style recognition, both quantitative and qualitative differences were found. In a multidimensional study using Italian Renaissance and Mannerist paintings as stimuli, experts used complex organizational dimensions of STYLE and COMPOSITION whereas novices used lower level concepts like NUMBER OF FIGURES, REALISM, and BACKGROUND/DETAIL.
