The longitudinal, torsional, and transverse displacements are determined for a rope which is initially straight in the reference configuration and loaded by an axial force and twisting moment. The static response of wire rope is analyzed using a recently developed technique in which the individual wires in a rope are examined.The effect of friction between adjacent wires on the nonlinear response is determined for the simplest wire rope geometry.
