Head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) can be utilized to enhance sound spatialization over a 4-channel loudspeaker system. While the illusion of multidimensional sound can be easily synthesized in a stereo headset using HRTFs, playback over loudspeakers introduces difficulties that reduce the quality of the illusion. Interaural crosstalk, room reflections, and head move- ments are detrimental to the image, and a good playback system should minimize these effects. An algorithm was developed that incorporates HRTFs from the desired image angle along with HRTFs from the loudspeaker locations to enhance spatialization.
