The Department of the Navy (DON) has taken great strides to decrease its facilities’ energy consumption in order to meet Federal and Department of Defense (DOD) energy conservation initiatives. In response to the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 the U.S. Navy has made it a priority to decrease its consumption of oil and fossil-fuel generated energy. Among other initiatives, the Navy is currently working towards a goal to reduce shore-based energy consumption by 50 percent, to generate half of shore-based energy requirements by alternative sources, and to achieve net zero status for half of all its installations by 2020.
