A careful account of the local and general distribution of the fishes of Illinois, their relations to their environment, and the function and relative importance of each species in the general system of aquatic life, was presented twenty years ago in a comprehensive work by Forbes and Richardson, which was based primarily on a state-wide ichthyological survey. In the present study the general methods employed in the former survey have been applied intensively to a small area, Champaign County, and use has been made of special methods which yield results more strictly quantitative.
