Export Diversification, External and Internal Effects: The Brazilian Case

However, there is inadequate empirical and theoretical work examining the side effects of such policies in the environment of a developing country.In this thesis, both micro and macro approaches are utilized in order to wholistically analyze the overall impact of such export policies. At the micro level, the role and strategies of trading companies and their related countertrade activities, and Brazilian and non-Brazilian multinationals are assessed in the light of the global effort towards export diversification. At the macro level, first, the impact of trade protectionist measures is analyzed in the light of continued efforts towards further export diversification. Second, a portfolio model is utilized to assess the Brazilian export promotion strategy. This approach allows for further simulations aimed at the stabilization of export earnings at a higher level. Third, the impact of the export promotion policy is assessed in the light of its impacts on employment, allocation of export incentives, and its impacts on regional exports.Chapter II discusses Brazilian export promotion policies and their impact on exports. Chapter III assesses the allocative and redistributive effects of exports on Brazilian economy. Chapter IV proposes an alternative approach to the analysis: a portfolio approach. Chapter V considers the export strategy of Brazilian subsidiaries of MNCs, and Chapter VI assesses the role of public enterprises in the exports of primary, semimanufactured, and manufactured goods, and technology. Chapter VII analyzes Brazilian private multinational as a conduit for the exports of technology; Chapter VIII focuses on Brazil's export marketing strategy overall. Chapter X considers Brazil's experience with export strategy and protectionism.
