This is a descriptive, exploratory study which examines the relationship between socially constructed, cultural meanings of HIV and AIDS and the provision of social support within African American kinship networks. Symbolic interaction theory and interpretive interaction methodology grounded the research. Twenty-seven African American males and females age 21-44 who had received an HIV, ARC, or AIDS diagnosis 2 to 65 months preceding the research were interviewed. Seven persons were asymptomatic and 20 were symptomatic.
