Macrophages (mos) exist as functionally heterogeneous populations. Mos derived from bone marrow precursor cells using either colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1) or granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) have been studied to determine the distinct functional phenotypes both constitutively and after stimulation.
