Optical networks have played a major role in allowing us to meet the bandwidth demands driven by the explosive growth of the Internet. As more and more bandwidth-hungry applications emerge, the aggregated traffic at the backbone layer will continue to grow. This increase in capacity poses challenges, especially in terms of reliability and overall management overhead. At the same time, the high bandwidth available in backbone networks lead to an increase in vulnerability to failures as huge amounts of data can be lost in a relatively short period of time.
