A rhodamine appended hexaphenylbenzene based derivative 5 has been designed and synthesized, which displays through bond energy transfer in the presence of picric acid in MeOH and serves as “turn on” sensor for picric acid. Furthermore, derivative 5 exhibits an intense colorimetric response towards picric acid and can selectively detect picric acid with a detection limit of 104.9 pg cm<sup>−2</sup>
