The review deals with some of the transport functions of different systems that have been implicated with several pathological disorders. Membrane transport role in parasitic diseases and metal resistance is discussed as a few selected examples. Among various limitations that are encountered in recombinant technology and in heterologous expression of proteins, transport functions of the host organisms cannot be ignored. Recently, membrane transport has acquired a new emerging role in multidrug resistance. Several membrane transporters, particularly ATP binding cassette (ABC) proteins that are involved in drug resistance, have been identified throughout the evolutionary scale.
