Although the interface phase in titanium alloys has recently been shown to be an artefact caused by thin foil specimen preparation techniques, its formation nevertheless presents some uniquely complex and puzzling features. Therefore, the wide variety of results that have emerged on this transformation (since the interface phase was first observed over a decade ago) are reviewed in this paper, and at attempt is made to provide a consistent view-point for its formation
