Iron(III) catalyses efficiently an unusual cyclocondensation of o-hydroxybenzaldehydes with 2,2-dimethoxypropane at ambient temperature to produce 2,4-dimethoxy-2-methyl-2H-1-benzopyrans in high yields with high diastereoselectivity. Also, it catalyses the formation of benzopyran derivatives from o-hydroxybenzaldehydes, acetone and trimethyl orthoformate
