X-ray photoelectron spectra are reported for single crystals of NbO in the binding energy range of −5 to +540 eV with respect to the Fermi level; the results are correlated with band structure schemes reported in the literature. A substantial electron density at the Fermi level in a very wide conduction band reported here is consistent with the highly metallic characteristics of the compound. Observations of spectra of Ar ions imbedded in the NbO matrix yield a work function of 6.45 eV for NbO.
