The response of a hydrodynamic seal to a specified initial disturbance or to an external excitation that is due to half-speed circular whirl of the rotor was investigated by numerically integrating the linearized and the non-linear equations of disturbed motion for lateral oscillations of the seal. The seal centre motion trajectories obtained are compared. The dynamic load on the seal body that is due to the initial disturbance of either the seal or the specified motion of the rotor was obtained
