A method of quantitative separation and recovery of certain quaternary ammonium bases using a Dowex 50 column is described. Carnitine can be recovered in 90% yield, betaine in 98% yield, trimethylamine oxide in 100% yield, and creatine in 90% yield. Simple paper chromatographic techniques permitting rapid identification of these compounds are discussed
