Nanosecond laser induced gratings have been studied in thin films of the biological molecule bacteriorhodopsin under resonant excitation in the self-diffraction geometry. The spectral variation of the first order diffraction efficiency around the absorption line centre and the effect of the angle of intersection of the input beams on the diffraction process are established
