The theoretical considerations which have suggested the possible existence of a new force, distinct from the well-known strong, electromagnetic, weak, and gravitational forces, are recalled briefly before assessing the experimental situation. Particular emphasis is given to the recent experiments searching for the new force and to future experiments especially those requiring space platforms
